Coaching Tip:

Intuitive Eating

We all know how our eyes can be bigger than our stomachs. But we can fully enjoy our favourite foods if we listen to our body’s signals and cues.

That’s why I want to talk about intuitive eating, which has helped me in many ways—not just by preventing indigestion, acid reflux, and all sorts of stomach discomfort and aches, but also by building a healthier relationship with food.

Based on my own experience and journey towards a healthier relationship with food, here are some key takeaways:

Support Your Digestion

  • Chew properly – Take your time with each bite. This can be challenging if you’re used to rushing through meals. But slowing down can be transformative and helps digest food faster and feel much better afterwards.

  • Be present – Never eat on the go. There is nothing worse than rushing and eating while multitasking. You not only don’t realise when you’re full, which leads to overeating, but you also increase the likelihood of indigestion, bloating and upset stomach.

  • Take deep breaths between bites – This helps support digestion and slows you down. It also helps you notice when you’re full, preventing overeating.

  • Avoid eating when stressed or angryIn these moments, your body is in fight-or-flight mode, and digestion naturally slows down. Take a few deep breaths before eating to switch to rest-and-digest. You can also ground yourself by placing your feet flat on the floor and feeling the ground.

  • Eat until you’re satisfied – Stop when you feel natural fullness, like when you feel a release of air from the stomach or need to lean back and take a deep breath. These are your body’s signals to stop eating.

  • Avoid drinking during meals — Drinking too much with meals can dilute stomach acids and slow down food digestion.

    Notice Your Mindset Around Food

  • Let go of food restrictionsRestricting foods can work against you, often leading to overeating later. If you allow yourself to have anything, you’re less likely to crave the things you try to limit. Fighting cravings only makes them stronger and they always backfire!

  • Release guilt —There is a strong connection between how you feel about food and how it impacts your body. Always enjoy your food without judgment.

  • Appreciate your mealsThe more appreciation you show towards your food, and its origin, the healthier your relationship will be with both your food and your body.

  • Never force it —Don’t force yourself to finish that last bite just to clear your plate. I’ve learned to let go of worrying about leaving food behind. (Food waste is something I’m always conscious about.)

  • Listen to body's cues —Next time you’re grocery shopping, skip the list and take a moment to tune in. Standing in front of the fruits and vegetables section is a great way to notice your body’s cues. Trust your intuition and whispers— your body is a beautiful masterpiece and can show you what it needs if you allow it.
